Did you know that we're edible?
This engaging workshop explores native South Australian flora through a series of interactive activities focussing on three edible species: Karkalla (Round-Leaf Pigface) Disphyma crassifolium, Mirnu (Golden Wattle) Acacia pycnantha and Kurti (Quandong) Santalum acuminatum. These hands-on activities aim to foster a deeper appreciation of nature and knowledge of the plants of your home state.
Join Maria Ppiros in this interactive workshop, exploring native South Australian edible flora through connections with botanical illustration, food, cooking and nature, to learn about the plants of our home state.
What it is:
Activity 1: ‘Observation of Nature’: using floral specimens provided by the Botanic Gardens of South Australia and the State Herbarium, connect with nature via touch, taste, smell and sight. Observation Sheets will guide you through the activity by engaging your senses. The aim of this activity is to stop, slow down, connect with nature and reflect.
Activity 2: ‘Approaches to Food’: learn about three common South Australian edible natives and how to prepare them, as well as the medicinal, health and environmental benefits they may have. You will also view a live cooking demonstration, with sample tastings included, by Tom Tilbury chef and owner of Gather Food Experiences and new restaurant Aces. This activity will be guided by Botanical Ingredient Cards with accompanying recipes donated by Chef Tom Tilbury and Dietitian Sascha Bull. This workshop series is proudly sponsored by Creative Native Foods, South Australian food supplier of 'high quality, ethically sourced, Australian native food produce', supplying to the public, hospitality and food services and manufacturing industries.
Activity 3: ‘Botanical Illustration’: in this activity, you will create your own botanical illustrations from life in a guided process. The use of dissections of specimens, with clear labelling and naming of segmentations will be explained, covering Latin/scientific, common and Kaurna naming conventions. This activity includes your own set of botanical illustration materials to use on the day and then take home.
*Please note that the order of which you complete these activities may vary depending on the date and time of your chosen workshop. All workshops will complete all activities.
*All participants must be 18 years old or older.
