How does a weekend of serious birdwatching on Kangaroo Island sound?
You can join other keen birdos, start your birding life, or improve your birding ID IQ in the Kangaroo Island Birdathon (Twitchathon) as part of Nature Festival SA. It’s free and there are three ways to join in.
1. 24-hours travelling
2. 12-hours travelling
3. 4 hours in your backyard
No matter which you choose, we’ll all meet at Duck Lagoon, Cygnet River KI, at 10.30 am, Sunday 15 October, for the tally up of numbers of birds seen by all teams. We’ll supply the KI bird checklist to all teams who register.
If you don’t know other people to form a team, or you are a beginner and want to learn more, let us know and we’ll see if we can get you into a team.
Rules
Teams are of 2 to 4 people who must all share the same vehicle (or backyard) and remain as a group throughout their Twitchathon time. All bird IDs must be confirmed, by sight or call, by at least one other team member.
24-hour teams: start 10am Saturday 14 October; finish 10am Sunday 15 October, with start and finish places, and route, of your choosing (but remember that you’ll need to get to Duck Lagoon by 10.30).
12-hour teams: complete continuous 12 hours on Saturday 14 October, with start and finish places, and route, of your choosing.
4 hours in your backyard: complete continuous 4 hours on Saturday 14 October, within your property.
Bird ID Apps can be used to identify species but cannot be used to ‘call up’ birds using recorded calls.
This event is free, it’s not a fundraiser. We want get people out into the beautiful natural environment of Kangaroo Island for an enjoyable weekend of bird watching, with a competitive edge!
You don’t have to be an expert bird watcher to participate, and you’re sure to improve your bird watching skills. If you want us to help you find a team, click the ‘Please help me find a team’ ticket option, or email us at kangarooislandtwitchathon@gmail.com
