An open garden belonging to a Landscape Architect, The Working Person’s Garden is a chance to see a professional at play as he experiments with signature materials like corten steel and natural timbers to create a modern outdoor living space suited to our climate and the character of the location.
The design of the garden cleverly takes advantage of the steep site and uses a series of flat terraces to manage and disguise the 8metre fall of the block. A contemporary look is achieved with corten steel steps while the level areas are made usable with natural stone setts, timber boardwalks, decks and sawdust paths. A standout feature is a superb outdoor bath handcrafted from Huon pine.
The garden has been transformed from a European aesthetic to an emerging Australian style with the use of native and Mediterranean plants, locally sourced materials and the reintroduction of food production.
The Working Person’s Garden provides solutions to a number of garden related problems. It demonstrates how when time poor it is possible to have an attractive functional garden; how to creatively manage a slope; use climate compatible plants to best effect and successfully live in harmony with big old Eucalypts.
