“Above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places” (Roald Dahl). For thousands of years labyrinths have travelled across continents and landscapes, appearing variously in starkly different environments at vastly different times for a variety of different reasons. What secrets have they known on their journeys; what knowledge do they hold within their gentle curving, turning and spiraling paths; what can they reveal to us as we engage and interact with them?
I will offer a workshop in which we will:
· explore the relationship between labyrinths and place, the knowledge and memories they hold
· delve into the relationships between labyrinth seed patterns, magic squares and planetary paths
· grow labyrinths from seed patterns
· apply seed pattern knowledge and skills to creating labyrinths on the beach, and have fun walking them
This workshops brings together a number of elements: something of the awe and mystery that is present within the Universe, the place and presence of the labyrinth ancient archetype within landscapes, the beauty of mathematics that is really the hidden architecture of the natural world, and the opportunity to physically experience the drawing, construction and walking of a labyrinth on the beach.
