Close to Harbour Town and the incessant traffic along Tapleys Hill Road, but seeming a wirld away.
Hidden on Adelaide Airport land, Patawalonga Creek contains the last remnant stand of swamp paperbark habitat in the metro area, accessible via a public walking trail since 2018. The adjacent West Beach stormwater detention basin, circled by a shared pedestrian and bike path, has been described as one of the best birdwatching sites in Adelaide.
Meet as busstop 14B on West Beach Road (opposite Atlantic Avenue); parking is available in the soccerfield carkpark, just west of the Creek.
The Friends of Patawalonga Creek have been involved in looking after the Patawalonga Creek remnant vegetation site on Adelaide Airport land south of West Beach Road, West Beach, since 1998. This rare remnant of native vegetation in the western suburbs of Adelaide contains the largest stand of Swamp Paperbarks (Melaleuca halmaturorum), left in the metropolitan area.
