Acclaimed filmmaker Sophie Hyde (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, Jimpa) joins Leigh Robb, Curator of Contemporary Art, to discuss the development of a new cinematic project responding to South Australia’s marine environments.
Working alongside the Great Southern Reef Foundation, marine restoration scientist Dr Dominic McAfee and underwater cinematographers documenting the impacts of the harmful algal bloom, Hyde is exploring the beauty, complexity and devastation unfolding beneath the surface. Her research also follows efforts to build new oyster reefs and support the regeneration of affected coastal ecosystems.
During her time in the ART POD, Hyde will experiment with ways of translating the underwater world through image and sound, while considering how real-world destruction and recovery might shape the fictional characters and narrative of a future film.
Presented as part of AGSA’s Tuesday Talks series, this lunchtime conversation offers insight into a film taking shape at the meeting point of art, science, ecological grief and regenerative action.
